Master's Degree Graduates

Charlie Ikosi

Year of Completion: 2022

LiDAR, above-ground biomass

Charlie is the founder of a consulting company based in Papua New Guinea that’s specialized in GIS and Remote Sensing applications. It was established to address a skills shortage of specialized GIS analysts/specialists in the country and endeavours to bring new approaches to GIS analysis that are based on research-proven statistical theories to address climate change, urban growth and to upskill GIS graduates. He studied for a Professional Masters in Geospatial Science and Technology at the University of Canterbury in 2021-2022. For his research project, he utilized airborne LiDAR data and field plot measurement to identify the spatial variations in above-ground biomass within forest plantations and then compared their carbon stockings against the New Zealand ETS look-up tables.

Supervisory team: David Norton, Bradley Case (Auckland University of Technology), Vega Xu

Yannina Whiteley

Year of Completion: 2020

Production and mixed-use forestry, terrain effects on forests, spatially-explicit modelling

Yannina is currently employed at Interpine Innovation as a Senior Resource Forester and GIS Analysts. As a mature student at the University of Canterbury, she undertook a Master’s degree on spatially explicit models of standing tree breakage and single-tree windthrow, supervised by Justin Morgenroth and Varvara Vetrova. She has previous degrees in forestry and plant science. She now works to support Interpine clients with GIS, spatial analysis, and growth modelling.

Thai Son Le

Year of Completion: 2018

Environmental management, forestry, Remote Sensing, GIS application, habitat modelling

I am a lecturer at the Department of Environmental Management, Vietnam National University of Forestry, with a keen interest in exploring the potentials of remote sensing and GIS for environmental management. I received my BSc in Forest Resources and Environment Management from Vietnam National University of Forestry. In 2018, I earned my Master's degree in Forestry Science from the University of Canterbury. My thesis centered around the development of a GIS-based model to support a strategic expansion of forest monitoring plots under the supervision of Associate Professor Justin Morgenroth. Currently, I am pursuing a Ph.D. at Murdoch University, Western Australia, with a vision to develop a remote sensing application that aims to protect the precious natural forests in Western Australia from water stress under the impact of climate change.
