Blake Singleton
Year of Completion: 2024
Forestry, remote sensing, geospatial science, statistical modelling
Blake Singleton is currently an Honours student at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, pursuing a Bachelor of Forestry Science degree. His honours dissertation focuses on practical applications of UAV imagery for assessing survival and health in New Zealand plantation forestry. Prior to this, Blake completed research with Scion as part of the Tools for Foresters initiative, utilising multispectral imagery for survival and health assessments using machine learning processes. Blake is committed to leveraging technology for meaningful insights into forestry. His interest lies in making remote sensing tools more accessible and useful for on-the-ground applications.

Engineering, forestry, remote sensing, geospatial technology
I am currently a final-year Honours student in the GIS and Remote Sensing Lab Group within the School of Forestry, University of Canterbury. My dissertation research is looking at the uptake and barriers of geospatial technologies in New Zealand’s plantation forestry sector. I am working towards a Bachelor of Forest Engineering with Honours from Canterbury University in New Zealand.

Remote sensing, LiDAR
I am currently employed at NZ Forestry as a Harvest Forester. I completed a Bachelor of Forest Engineering with Honours at the University of Canterbury. Over the summer break between the third and fourth year, I took on a research project, under the supervision of Vega Xu, looking into describing the yield of small-scale forests using publicly available LiDAR. I then carried on this project as my dissertation in my final year. I learnt many new skills throughout the course of the project from mapping through to programming. I have also made use of the publicly available LiDAR at my workplace.

Remote sensing
I am currently employed at PF Olsen as a Graduate Forester. As a student at the University of Canterbury, I received a BForSc(Hons). In my final year decided to undertake a dissertation comparing the accuracy of Landsat 9 with Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 for exotic forest detection in the East Coast of New Zealand. I was supervised by Justin and enjoyed the support and guidance received throughout the project. I have found the skills I learnt during the Honours project to be immensely important in my job. The ability to plan, implement, and then present a project, while actively receiving feedback from peers and SoF academics, helped set me up well for moving into industry.
